Song Selections - Week Ending 8/15/04

Question:
I'm playing bass this week, and will post our list after rehearsal.
Answer:
I'm off this week, no songs for me! ha ha ha
Answer:
Prelude - Hands Down by Dashboard Confessional (we were supposed to do it awhile back, but didn't get to)
Ancient of Days (E) - with the cool Lit "My Own Worst Enemy" riff.
The Way (F) - Telecast song
Make A Joyful Noise/I Will Not Be Silent (G) - David Crowder fave
All That I Need (D) - great song by the lead singer of the violet burning
Once Again (D)
Answer:
Well, this Sunday is going to be a little different for us, because our Pastor is going to be sharing his vision of where the church should be heading, and so needless to say, we're doing some new (for us) material.
~P&W~
Sing (CD)
More to This Life (SCC) - G
~Prayer~
As We Worship You - D/F
~Intro Points to the message~
Not To Us - A
~Message~
Take My Life/Here am I - D
~Invitation~
I Give You my Heart - G
~Offertory~
Untitled Original - C/E (Which has a terrrrrible modulation in it because someone who has no training in writing music wrote the song and wanted it that way. She ends the bridge on a Bb with a fermata and then immediately starts in E. It's quite painful).
~Closing~
Not To Us (Chorus) - A
As I said, some new material.

Call to Worship
O Day of Rest and Gladness
Prayer of Confession
Father, our prayer is that you would take us deeper. That our love for you and our neighbor would abound more and more in knowledge and depth of understanding. That we might be able to discern what is best and to be filled with Your glory.
Lord Jesus, give us a deeper repentance, a horror of sin, a dread of its approach. Help us chastely to flee it and jealously to resolve that our hearts be Yours alone.
Give us a deeper trust, that we may lose ourselves to find ourselves in You alone. Give us a deeper knowledge of Yourself as Savior, lord, and king. Give us deeper power in private prayer, more sweetness in Your Word, more steadfast grip on its truth. Give us deeper holiness in speech, thought and action. Keep us from seeking moral virtue apart from You.
Plough deep in us, great Lord, that our hearts may be a tilled field, the roots of grace spreading far and wide, until You alone are seen in us, Your beauty golden like summer harvest, Your fruitfulness as autumn plenty.

We have no master but You, no law but Your will, no delight but You alone, no wealth but what You give, no peace but what You grant. We have nothing but what we receive from You. Quarry us deep, dear Lord, and then fill us to overflowing with living water. Amen.

The Lord’s Table
The Lord’s Supper, also called Communion or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all committed followers of Jesus Christ to partake of this sacrament: those who are baptized members of a congregation which proclaims the gospel, who are at peace with God and with their neighbor, and who seek strength to live more faithfully for Christ. If you are not a Christian, or if you are not prepared to share in this meal, we encourage you to spend this time in prayer using the prayers provided as guidelines.
Invitation to the Lord’s Table
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Leader: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them to the Lord.
Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give Him our thanks and praise.
The Words of Institution
Leader: And so, we proclaim our faith.
People: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

Ouch.
Normally, I'd be inclined to give the person the benefit of the doubt..... but a freaking leap of a tritone??? That's insane. It must be worse for whoever is singing to try and find the note in the new key, 'cause the Bb certainly isn't going to be any help. (by the way, if the song goes from C to E, what in the world is the Bb doing in the bridge anyway?? Bb is nowhere near diatonic in the key of C, and it's not a common chromatic chord either for that key.)
In His love,
Nate

Ouch indeed. I too would give people the benefit of the doubt as well, but the first time I listened to the recording of it, I KNEW there was something wrong. Which my fears were proved true by looking over the music.
As for the reason for the Bb... I'll attempt to explain it. The last score of the bridge has:
Am | F G | Ab Bb | Bb (fermata)
So we're basically making a chromatic modulation to Eb major as you already know by the time you're reading this sentence.
So, obviously, when I saw that I said "Oh, ok, we're going to Eb most likely" Boy did I get a shock when I turned the page. It's terrible because the person who's singing it (who just so happens to be the person who wrote the song) has to make the modulation and sing into that tritone modulation. The rest of the song doesn't even settle into E until the second measure into it. I already tried to present my solution to this problem to our music pastor (which was very simple. Make Am and Bo into secondary dominants and half cadence on the B, making a Perfect Authentic cadence into E. Or if they wanted to keep the chromatic modulation, just go to Eb or F. Neither are pretty, but they'd work).
Either ways, this is a perfect example of how NOT to modulate, if you're a music student.
And I also have an update on the setlist. Turns out we're doing Not to Us in B instead of A... Yay... *grumble* (Hint: I hate B)
