I do throw some slaps into my guitar playing as well. But for some good examples of slap lines, you can check out some contemporary gospel recordings. A few bassist to watch for are Maurice Fitzgerald, Reggie Young, and Fred Hammond.

Why do they think you're crazy? I like slapping the thing in quite a few situations... Strumming is so boring!
Slapping the bass is also quite fun. I'm not very good at it yet. Expiriment with different spots on the string(s) and different parts of your hand.
If you have a chance to see videos of "Victor Wooten" of Flecktones then do so. He is an incredible bass player and doesn't follow the normal rules.
