Welcome to www.thanktoday.com !!!

when? how? where? of praciticing for worship?

Question:
Hello everyone. This is my first 'thread' on this message board. [first ever posting on any mb!!!] I've been leading worship for our college career group for almost two years now, and i am just curious to know what ways other teams prepare for upcoming worship sessions.
for example: My team leads the 1pm worship every sundays, and we practice on saturday nights from 7pm to about 10-11pm. I start off by...
1 beginning prayer
2 hand out music
3 read, examine, and study the lyrics of all the songs
4 initial run non stop through the songs
5 practice song by song
6 bible study on the topic of worship, lead weekly by each member
7 second run non stop through the songs
8 group prayer
9 third run if necessary or time permitting
10 end prayer
i've never been apart of another worship team prior to leading this one, and so i just wonder if anyone can give me an advice on practicing efficiently on a time limit, or even simply the best ways to lead a practice.
Answer:
first off, welcome to CGR! I hope you enjoy your time here
When I am leading Worship at the 10:45 sunday service, we usually have a practice for a couple of hours on Thursday night.
the general plan for the practice is:
15-20 mins fellowship
Opening prayer
Hand out music
Play through each song, working out arrangements etc.
Full run through of opening set
Time of prayer for Sunday service
End

OK, I guess I will start the dissenting opinion.
I separate the study and practice. My goal is to make the time of practice as efficient as possible. I also introduce songs to the band well in advance so there really is no need to examine each song, each week.
So,
Opening Prayer
Quickly run new songs for coming weeks to get an idea of feel etc
Introduce any odd transitions or deviations from normal on songs
Run the songs in order with transitions
Knock down rough spots
Close with Prayer
Try to keep it under an hour. We have been successful with this. Able to learn new stuff quickly. Band members are expected to practice at home, polish at practice.
We do bible study during a different time from practice.
Answer:
Our team has been playing for 7 years with few member changes, and almost all of our worship team members are involved in leadership (children's ministry, youth) so we have minimal practices. We run a practice Thursday nights for an hour. I have all the music ready and laid out before practice start. We get right into practice at 7 pm. I say a prayer, we listen to whatever new song we might be doing, run through it a couple times, run through our Sunday set, then maybe do the new song again at the end.
