Not to mention the little fact that the leader left me in charge while he went to go do something else, WITHOUT telling me in advance that he was gonna do that...
I don't deal well with being in charge.
Needless to say, it didn't go well from there on out. Oh, and did I mention that I was playing acoustic (for the first time in a LONG time), while the bass player played 'lectric, and the lousy, Slipknot-fan, Ozzy on the brain, "other" bass player played bass. Wow it was a bad night. And to top it all off, we found out a little later that one of the youth choir members got hit by a car earlier today. Apparently, she's OK, but I think they're gonna keep her overnight, just to make sure and to see if she might have some broken stuff or internal damage or whatever.
Fun night.

i'll pray for you.
so...what exactly was the problem with the bassist? besides the fact that he was a metal-head....how did that affect the practice?

The fact that he really knows nothing about the instrument is a slight hinderance. A few notes, but that's all. No concept about rhythm, tempo, where the changes are, reading charts, etc. And he's a brand new Christian (accepted Christ about 6 months ago), so he doesn't really know WHY he's up there. He just is. But he REALLY needs to learn how to play, 'cause I'm gonna be leaving for college in a few short months, and our current bass player is gonna switch over to electric, while the other kid plays bass for him, so he should start now and... Ugh, sometimes I hate working with them... and other times it's a blast...
I'll shut up now.
Answer:
At least he doesn't smoke pot and steal prescription drugs from his stepson (see other thread).
I think we all deal with people on our teams that rub us the wrong way or we just don't gel with.
Answer:
You're definitely right about that. Sometimes, I just don't understand why some people come at all! The biggest problem I have isn't a lack of talent, lack of gear, lack of personnel or anything like that. My biggest problem is that some of the guys have a complete lack of enthusiasm for what they're doing!
It's wierd, but when I mention practice, they always have some excuse as to why they "might not be able to make it", but they always show. Then at practice, they'll have complaints about the timing of the practice, or tell me why they have to leave early. Then we start practicing, and I have to work like a dog to get them to show a little creativity and dynamic. They show little to no enthusiasm for their instrument, and as soon as we have 5 minutes of free space, they're playing something else and I have to work to get them back to their original instruments. I'd let them play the other instruments if they were willing to do it in a service, but they're not. They just want to mess around with it. It's like their attention span is limited to about 10 minutes, and their "enthusiasm span" (the amount of time in which they exhibit any energy and any excitement about what their doing whatsoever) is limited to about 2 minutes. They rarely even so much as try to suggest anything musically, or try to do anything different on their instruments. Sometimes it's like they're robots, playing the same thing, the same way, for every song.
They're not like that all the time. On the contrary, sometimes we have a blast in practice, and everyone seems to be overflowing with creativity! But that doesn't happen often...

Back to song selections:
we're only doing one song in the morning; actually, I should clarify. We sing more songs than that, but since we have divided, oops, I mean "blended" worship I only ever know the contemporary songs in advance. We're doing "You are Good" as done by Isreal Houghten. It will be quite a culture shock for our church. We did one other gospel tune a while back and while a few people seemed to be interested, most kinda had a deer in the headlights look on their faces.
In the evening we're doing:
Ancient of Days
One Name
You Said (yeah, yeah I know)
Breathe

That would be the Lakewood tune, right? ("We worship You, Hallelujah, hallelujah", would be the tune I'm thinking of)
Answer:
yes that's correct. Are you familiar with the Isreal Houghten version?

Indeed I'm really looking forward to it, it's one of the few songs where I get to use a wah pedal to full effect
