Extra-biblical imagery and double standards.
Question: Fig 1: "When sorrows like sea billows roll" Is OK, because it's a hymn. Fig 2: "Dancers who dance upon injustice" Is NOT OK, because it was written after 1870, and worse yet, by Delirious! I love this forum, but this double standards crap, and I mean crap, has got to go. Answer: I've often thought about this so called double standard. I don't know that it is a double standard. Here is my first stab at this: In the first example, the somewhat abstract metaphor occurs during the verse, setting up the main lyric and theme of the song. In the second example, it occurs during the chorus, where we are used to having the essence of the idea. Also, I don't think this "double standard" is unique to this forum. Answer: Originally Posted by niangelo Fig 1: "When sorrows like sea billows roll" Is OK, because it's a hymn. no, i'd say it's ok because it's a simile; comparing our sorrows to the violence and magnitude of "sea billows". Fig 2: "Dancers who dance upon injustice" Is NOT OK, because it was written after 1870, and worse yet, by Delirious! i'd say it's ok, and because it's also a metaphor. arguing that this is somehow wrong, or theolically incorrect would be bordering on adhering to the theology of fundamentalism and puritanism. delirious is a band that focuses on outreach, and in doing so happen to pump out some awesome worship songs. but their main goal from the beginning has been to live the christian life and write songs about it. that doesn't limit us to "worship songs", depending on your definition of a worship song. delirious are christians who write music, and you don't have to look far to find a song by delirious that most churches probably wouldn't consider for congregational worship. there's a problem when people post their set lists that include songs by U2, Lifehouse, and other bands that aren't overtly christian (let alone overtly worship artists), and then in another thread, pick holes in the theology of "dancers who dance upon injustice". I love this forum, but this double standards crap, and I mean crap, has got to go. ....which is what i was getting at above. ...that's how i see it anyway. i sort of agree, but i don't agree with making it a generalization to this board, or singling this board out. Answer: I've never heard people here (though I do not hear everything here) critisize "Dancers who dance upon injustice" as imagery that is non-biblical, but rather because they had no idea what it could sensically mean, and/or because they thought that the content conveyed was not in line with the Bible. And yes, we hate Deleriou5? Answer: I dion't quite understnad what the problem is here ??? Answer: Originally Posted by Dave_01 Oh, thanks for clearing that up. Answer: "When sorrows like sea billows roll" Envokes imagery of waves crashing against the shore. The image makes sense. "because it's a hymn." People on here do critise hymns, just ask alot of people in here about 'blessed assurence'. Fig 2: "Dancers who dance upon injustice" Doesn't really bring to mind any coherent thought. Are they celebrating triumph over injustice? Or what? What does it mean? "I love this forum, but this double standards crap, and I mean crap, has got to go." Ok, but your example is comparing 2 completely different types of lines. And you assume all hymns are considered great (they are not), among other errors.
