The Meek Shall Inherit (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern)-RC
Question: Okay, so here's a little Tom Stoppard-inspired song...pop-punk, if you're wondering. I used to think "to be or not to be" was the question But now in retrospect I see I was so mistaken Because I can't see the method In this madness we call life And the strife stands here unshaken, unshaken And everyone around us stays the same Like part of some gigantic game And now I collide with reality Taking issue with the darkness I can't see I only know the Truth; I cannot pretend The world will escape Rosencrantz and Guildenstern's revenge And I sink into the maze of questions that are haunting You can't disprove that this world is always daunting But call me up just when You think you've got me all figured out I've got to tell you, good luck hunting, hunting And only friendship's gonna stay the same Because this world is not a game And now I collide with reality Taking issue with the darkness I can't see I only know the Truth; I cannot pretend The world will escape Rosencrantz and Guildenstern's revenge Because we all collide with reality And it doesn't matter what we all see We just have the Truth, don't need to pretend And the world isn't ready For Rosencrantz and Guildenstern's revenge And the fingernails grow after death, As does the beard And this coin shows heads again- Just as I feared Don't bother asking what goes on Inside my head Because I know the real question: "Are Rosencrantz and Guildenstern really dead?" Answer: Originally Posted by +SEAL+ I used to think "to be or not to be" was the question But now in retrospect I see I was so mistaken Because I can't see the method In this madness we call life And the strife stands here unshaken, unshaken Life/strife tends to be a really weak rhyme. It doesn't have to be, but I've very rarely seen it be anything but unsatisfactory, and it is unsatisfactory here. I also don't see how the rest of the verse addresses any reasons for "to be or not to be" being a question. In fact, it seems a lot like a ponderance of why not to be. And everyone around us stays the same Like part of some gigantic game And now I collide with reality Taking issue with the darkness I can't see I only know the Truth; I cannot pretend The world will escape Rosencrantz and Guildenstern's revenge I'm not sure what to say about this, because stylistically, nothing jumps to mind except overuse of "and" and I'm not really catching what you're saying, which leaves me hamstrung in regards to UCing. It's probably just been too long since I last read Hamlet. And as I sink into the mist of questions haunting You can't disprove that this world is just so daunting But call me up just when You think you've got me all figured out I've got to tell you, good luck hunting, hunting I hate the word order on the first line. If you can do anything to change 'questions haunting" do so. 'Just so" doesn't feel like it fits in the second line. And only friendship's gonna stay the same Because this world is nothing like a game And now I collide with reality Taking issue with the darkness I can't see I only know the Truth; I cannot pretend The world will escape Rosencrantz and Guildenstern's revenge Because we all collide with reality And it doesn't matter what we all see We just have the Truth, don't need to pretend And the world isn't ready For Rosencrantz and Guildenstern's revenge "Because this world is nothing like a game" is two syllables longer than "Like part of some gigantic game" and it feels awkward. And the fingernails grow after death, As does the beard And this coin shows heads again- Just as I feared Don't even talk to me about That kid Alfred Because I know the real question: "Are Rosencrantz and Guildenstern really dead?" The first four lines and the last two are some of the strongest, if not the strongest, in the song, but the fifth and sixth lines are terrible. The problem with this section is one that I notice all through the song; you're simultaneously using a slightly more poetic, almost archaic voice, along with a more colloquial style, and it doesn't mesh well. Overall, the lyrics aren't bad, but they aren't stunningly excellent either. Answer: The central idea of the song kinda goes like this... Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, in Hamlet and in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, are basically a couple of guys who are really clueless as to everything that's going on around them. They just hold on to a few central ideas, simple ideas...especially in R&G are Dead. So I'm taking this idea of a couple simpletons living life and applying it over to life, especially with the song's title (The Meek Shall Inherit). "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern's revenge" refers to the fact that it's going to be the people who hold fast to their beliefs, not the people who know their way around the world, who will make it in the end. Which is why I've got the last line: are Rosencrantz and Guildenstern really dead? The first verse basically addresses just how confusing life is. And some of it is wordplay off of Hamlet (to be or not to be, method to his madness) I did go back and rework some of the wording. Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
