"The usual"
Question: as a worship leader i am always on the lookout for new songs. and most of the time...i find them fairly easily. they are catchy, new, and popular. we play alot of hillsong united, passion, matt redman, chris tomlin and such. but what i am looking for is not a catchy or popular song. i am looking for a song that will strike the heart. a song that is deep and will draw tears. im looking for a blast from the past or just a song that you think fits in the category of "Man, that was awesome." Answer: That could be hard, because a song that you think is how you described might not be the case for most of the people you lead. It depends on where you are at that moment the song is played. You could always challenge yourself and write one. Answer: Go listen to Iona's recording of "When I Survey" off of their Journey Into The Morn. I am enamored with Negro spirituals and American folk songs, particularly "Were You There? and "What Wondrous Love." Stuart Townend has two fantastic "modern hymns," "How Deep The Father's Love" and "In Christ Alone." Our beloved Benj Pocta (CGR SN: benj) has a version of "Rock Of Ages" that is amazing; search here for it. On the less stereotypical "worship song" side, there is Jars of Clay's "These Ordinary Days," which I adore. Also, you have things like Derek Webb's "Wedding Dress" and "I Want A Broken Heart," which are tough to hear. Finally, there are seasonal things such as Andrew Peterson's entire Christmas "cantata," "Behold The Lamb Of God." All of these I consider "deep" in some way. In His love, Nate Answer: a lot of it is in the prayerful preparation. we've done simple kids songs in a certain setting that The Holy Spirit has used in a powerful way to slap us on the head, and other times real " blasters" that haven't worked well at all. As God to act, EXPECT God to act, then be amazed when he does!!! Answer: I agree with the people who have already posted; it really, really, really depends on your audience. If you have an audience who is willing to worship you could play almost any song and it will bring them to their knees. If your audience is just a bunch of people who aren't passionate about worship, you could play some amazing songs and they'll still be there just as bored as before. Worship isn't just about the leaders, it's about the audience and their attitude of worshipping an Almighty God. But, on the other hand, I'll give you some songs that really hit home for me, and maybe it will give you an idea of some songs to use: Into Your Presence - Kutless redid this song on "Strong Tower"; very good powerful song. I would strongly recommend "Strong Tower" to any Worship Team, it's phenomenal. Hungry Be Thou My Vision There's a few more I'll try to get you, but I hope this helps you out!
