There is actually a couple of different sounds, but mainly it is Distortion (like in the chorus)... The little solo thingy that sounds sort of like what the piano was playing (right after the first chorus) is played on, what I believe is just a regular electric, possibly it has an Overdrive effect on but I'm not sure.
And in the verse it basically just palm muted Distortion.

It's a Pedal (or an effect that you can turn on on the Amp).
It depends... it CAN take away the other sounds, depending on the pedal... but most likely it won't.
Just curious... if you don't play guitar, then why are you asking? Not to be rude or anything, just plain curiousity.
