Two problems
Question: Some of you may remember my thread about my Youth Group (if not, search for it if you want a long read ). Anyway, I got an email today to say that I'm doing the sound desk this week at youth. I'm not active there any more and no one asked me if I would do it, an email just showed up saying that I was on the roster. I don't mind doing it, but it annoys me a bit that they didn't even ask me to do something I've never officially done at youth group before. The second problem is that I found out TODAY that my school worship band is playing at another church this weekend. I had no idea that this was happening and I went through all of the stuff our director has given us before and there was no mention of this. The problem is that I already have paid for tickets to a concert and I'm not sure if I'll be back in time. I am going to the concert, but am I doing the right thing? Sure, the band is important and everything, but it is such short notice and I've already forked out $30 for something that I've been planning to go to for two months now. Answer: As far as running sound for the youth group...if you don't go to that church anymore or are not involved with the youth group, I'd just call them and tell them you aren't available to do it anymore. Whether that means coming anyways this time I am not sure...it sort of depends when you are supposed to do it and how long they have to find somebody else. But IMO it's not your responsibility if you aren't involved theree. Concert-wise, yeah, I think you are doing the right thing, at least, if I was in your shoes that's what I'd be doing. There's no way that you can plan ahead for events that you don't know are going to be happening. If they wanted to have a concert then, they should have put it on the schedule. It's sort of a personal-call ... depending on just how big a concert it is and your level of dedication to the band, but IMO they should have talked to everybody to verify that the date was OK before securing the gig. Answer: As far as sound, it takes a little more experience than just walking in the day of and doing it. it does take a bit of experience. Further, if they didn't even ask you and you didn't say yes you'd do it, when they asked you, you have no obligation to it. they just assumed you'd do it. And we all know what happens when you assume. And I somewhat agree with flyguy as far as the band. But with one little additive, what is your role in the band? Answer: I can do sound, I used to do it for a lot of different things like children's programs and sunday night services. I've just never officially done it at youth group before, hence it being incredibly out of the blue. As for the band, I'm one of the guitarists. I was the only one for a while, but then they added another one and to be honest I don't actually do much in the band anymore because the other guy is more skilled than me, so I sort of get shoved off to the side (it's not quite that bad, but yeah...I get other opportunities like recording the guitar for our upcoming album). Answer: Ok, I didn't realise you've done sound before. I still hold that both groups were rather rude not to have checked with you to begin with. Personally I'd lean towards not going to either. The youth band practices from 4:30 onwards (a ridiculous time considering most of us don't finish school until 3:15 and most of us don't get home until after 3:45) but I'm just going to get there whenever I'm ready instead of racing out the door. As for Sunday, I've told the director I can't make it...at least I hope so, I couldn't find him today so I sent him a message. Answer: 4.30 thats ridiculous!!! it sounds pretty typical of your youth though...i think they are asking too much. Thats just me. Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
