Music Therapy?
Question: I am a high school junior and am wanting to major in music therapy. I took piano lessons for 7ish years in elementary/junior high, but quit when I became too busy. To make a long story short, I re-taught myself the piano, taught myself more advanced music theory, and learned the guitar and bass well. My problem is that the music therapy programs I am looking at (App. State, FSU, UGA, etc.) require an audition, because I would be studying in the school of music of the respective university. They are all calling for classical pieces, and I just don't have those kinds of skills anymore. I've focused too much on theory and became too well-rounded on too many instruments. I was wondering if I can be admitted to the university (not the school of music yet) and get my general education classes out of the way before I audition for the school of music. That would give me time to get some lessons again in classical piano before I audition. Someone please explain to me how this works, and if I can delay the audition for a year. Max Answer: Can you sing? A 17th-Century Italian art song is going to be easier to learn than a Beethoven Sonata. That is what I did, I auditioned for vocal principal, and after I was accepted, changed to a piano principal. Answer: max, yeah, you prob could do other classes first. however, in the music program, you'd prob have more music classes than anything. not sure though for music therapy. when i was looking a colleges, one of my top 2 schools was Indiana University. i was looking at their audio recording program. as it was through their music program, i was going to have to audition. there was no way around it, as almost every single class i needed to take was within the music departmet. i ended up not going there, due to just not feeling at home at the school, and totally falling in love with the school i'm at now. but anyway, you could always ask them at the school. peace, chris Answer: Originally Posted by MrCrabby Can you sing? Unfortunately, I don't think I could pass any audition by singing I looked at the curriculum for the music therapy program at most of the schools I'm looking at, and most of them are music classes, but there are alot of general eds, too. I probably am better off asking the schools when I visit in a couple of weeks. Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
