for a gift to really mean something, I think it should come from your knowledge of what that person likes, be inexspensive, and shows that you put time and thought into it. I appreciate my more exspensive gifts from my family and friends, but the gifts that show the thought and care they put into it mean the most.
if I were married/in a relationship/what have you, if any gifts are given, I would want them to be gifts that he put a lot of thought into, like a poem, or hand-picked flowers, anything sweet, simple, inexspensive, and thoughtful.

Best received... I had a necklace which, though inexpensive, was around my neck every day for a long while.

Personally i think that is wrong. I gave my girlfriend a gift for christmas last year, and it was a white gold necklace with a little diamond. It wasnt heaps expensive but then again it wasnt paricularly cheap. I put a lot of thought into it because i wanted it to be special, and it took me many many different stores to find the one i wanted.... i didnt even know that many jewlery stores exsisted.
Anyhow my point is, inexpensive doesnt always signify thought... it often signifies... hmmm.... inexpensive, cheap, tacky etc etc
But on the other hand it sounds like it works for you so thats awesome! you can save some money!

as the saying goes, "it's the thought that counts." I bet your girlfriend loved the necklace all the more because of the time and effort you put into getting it. You are right, inexspensive doesn't always signify thought, nor does exspensive always signify thought, thought signifies thought I just happen to be fiscally conservative, so yes it works for me

J/k...that's some awesome stuff.
I've only been dating three months, so as far as extravagant gifts, none to be found.
Although I am going to take her to the zoo this weekend which she absolutely loves. And then later than night we're going to go and get some desert fondue. And I'm also getting her the Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory soundtrack...her favorite movie.
Small stuff, but yet meaningful enough.
