The ministers suggested things and we kind of picked through them.

Yeah, our church gave us a selection and we picked from that... we didn't really want to write our own. Even if you did want to write your own though, the selections the church gives you could be a good guide.

we picked ones that our pastor that performed the ceremony had. We also picked out personal readings and things that we liked from books on vows.

some of the things about our wedding I wanted personalized and unique... but there were some things I felt should be the traditional "old fashioned" way.

We went with the traditional vows, too. Originally we thought of writing our own, but I'm so glad we didn't. Before you're married you really have no idea what kind of things you will encounter and what kind of things you will need to vow to your spouse. The traditional vows do a really good job of covering the basics, and any vows we would've written ourselves I think would have made us look incredibly naive to everyone who witnessed them.
