Secular Music
Question: My Mom has always hated secular music and not allowed us to listen to it, until we reach some unknown age. I have never really heard one reason why Secular Music is wrong. Now is it wrong for me to listen to it when I'm not allowed to? Second how can I show her that theres nothing wrong with it as long as It's not affecting me in any negative ways. So far my only strategy is first, nowhere does the bible mention secular music (to my knowledge) and that if we can't listen to secular music we can't sing happy birthday. You don't have to prove things AREN'T sinful. She needs to show something is sinful or non-profitable for you. You can't prove something isn't wrong that isn't mentioned in scripture. However, none of that really matters if she puts her foot down. I would call that bad parenting but you still must honor and obey it. Answer: Oh well. Thank you. I understand. Answer: Have you asked your mom why she holds her position? Answer: Well sort of. She just says either "because it's what I say" or else "It brings you down." I haven't brought it up in a while so she won't really realize I'm listening to it. Answer: ...take that as a life's lesson as what not to do when/if you're a parent. Still obey your parents. Answer: Hi there... new here... was loking around and this thread kinda caught my attention... Well.. umm.. first off, I'm sure every parent has a reason to disallow their children from doing certain things, mostly because they believe it's for their own good. But in this case.. if your mom doesn't allow for it, then i guess the sensible and Godlike thing to do is to honour her. I've known some parents that even consider mainstream christian rock as 'bad' or 'misguiding'. Well, the bible did not say anything about secular music being bad. However, Paul did mention that 'everything is lawful, but not everything is edifying', hence applied here, secular music is lawful, but not all secular music is edifying i.e. devil worshipping acts (for obvious reasons) or songs with negative lyrics that denote anger, hatred etc etc. So basically, it all boils down to wisdom in selecting the types of things you listen to; and this standard varies in every individual. X can be listening to, say Linkin Park, and then get influenced to feed his fits of anger, but Y can listen to the same music and yet not get affected. So, in your case, perhaps your mom's view on secular music is bad, and you're more liberal towards it. It's all a difference in standards, really. But the bottom line is: exercise wisdom. Christian music still roxxxx, btw Answer: All right, young Master Sniffen. It's my strong recommendation that cease and desist from listening to secular music immediately. If your mother tells you not to listen to it, that is that. Whether you like the rule or not, it is there. She may not have a real reason for it, but she just wants to protect you and bring you up as a godly Christian man. Do her a favor and try and meet her halfway there. Just because a rule doesn't seem to make sense, follow it because the thing it restricts is entirely unnecessary. Besides, who pays for your food, electricity, internet? Who bought your stereo? She is ALLOWED to restrict things that she, or your father, pays for. Very much in her prerogative. As far as convincing her that secular music is NOT bad, I really can't help you there. Ask her if you can buy a secular album or two if she looks at all of the lyrics first and certifies them not bad? I don't know. Answer: Originally Posted by Andrew All right, young Master Sniffen. Answer: My mom had the same "unwritten rule" anyways, she always said that if you listened to songs with cuss words about drinking and sex and everything bad, it would become more "normal" to you. You might not just automatically become bad, but it would slowly seem less-bad to you untill you didn't really notice anymore. It's true, it happened to me. However, is that because of the music itself or because of your attitude towards the things described in the music? I listen to secular music at work every night. Granted the station we listen to doesn't exactly get explicit on things like drugs, sex (extramarital and affair-wise), and other stuff like that very often. But there are songs that do speak of them and even sometimes we get the odd song that's even worse. The reason I haven't fallen into those sins is because I know they are wrong. Sidenote: The sins I have fallen into are from other reasons besides music. I mean, I love Pink Floyd's music. But just because I like their music doesn't mean my views on drug use is any more lax. If you've ever seen the movie for The Wall you'll know what I'm talking about. It's one big drug hallucination. Your post sounds more like a personal experience where if it causes you to sin get rid of it. But it's no more evil if you don't get rid of it. This point is interesting in one sense. I have heard it said that for the tv, shows like Neighbours (silly evening soap over here) or friends are worse for people to watch then say charmed, or sabrina, because neighbours etc. get people used to the idea that certain sinful lifestyles are the accepted norm (I know that many are), but when you teach people that its ok, then they will have no problem doing it themselves, whereas most people recognise the other shows are so far out there. Whether thats true or not with TV or even music I dont know. Answer: Originally Posted by Chris Your post sounds more like a personal experience where if it causes you to sin get rid of it. It's something to think about anyway. Answer: Out of the blue I did not like secular music anymore. I started listening to Christian music and found great things exist in that Genre. Is it in your interest to please God? If so, consider the following: Psalm 150 - Praise Ye the Lord, Praise God in His sancuary...let everything that hath breath praise the Lord, Praise ye the Lord. If this music causes you to sin, do not consider listening to it. If it puts bad thoughts in your mind do not consider listening to it. Proverbs 23:7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he... I find it impossible to listen to secular music and not think thoughts I would openly share with God or my parents. I have a desire to praise God whenever I can and I wish to keep my mind on Him as much as I can and I find listening to what is about Him helps me accomplish this. This is me though, God has set this on my heart and has led me to the place that I am at. If I have even the slightest thought that I could not sing that to God, I would not listen to it. I wish to keep my thoughts on Him and meditate on His Word rather than getting "I like big butts" stuck in my head all day singing it. This is up to you when you hit that age, but for now, your parents have the upper hand. Try to understand why you mother has put this restriction on you. If you wish to get another answer than "Cause I say so", sit her down at the dinner table and sincerely tell that you wish to understand her situation on secular music and ask her what she would like you to listen to. Ask her what her favorite songs are, her favotire band, I mean, you are kinda stuck in this anyway, might as well make the best of it. Love, Sizz Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
