small groups
Question: hey kids! how are you all? i hope everyone is doing well. anyway, i'm taking on a pretty major task and i was wondering if i could get some help. see i was talking to some people and i found out that the chicas in our youth group have been longing for something more so i invited them all to come to my house like once a month and i'm going to plan like a little small group session to talk about whatever they want. however the thing is that i am very insecure and i'm so scared that i'm gonna screw up, so i was wondering if anyone had ideas or anything that i could do. i need some suggestions of what activities i could do, what kinda talks i should give and that sort of thing. i was thinking that i would pick a new song for each session and base it on the theme of that and then play a few games and then get into the serious stuff. but i really need some help, so if anyone has any ideas please let me know. or also if you know any good cds to get or books that could help out either as resources or with the session directly. thank you so much! you are the best! Answer: Well, we do a small group Bible study every Wednesday. We pick a book of the Bible (right now we're in 1 Peter) and just study so much of it every week. I write about it in my journal. On that day, we sit down and have some snacks. We chat about our weeks. Then we do prayer requests and pray. We start in our Bible study, just discussing, etc. Then we pray at the end and we go home. It's usally about one and a half hours if we're not too chatty at the beginning. First... and this will sound bad, so hear me out, ok? But stop being afraid to screw up, and realize that chances are...you will. You're a human and you're not perfect, so there is no way for you to be a perfect small group leader. Don't expect yourself to be perfect, but expect your personal best. Did that make sense? haha. As far as ideas, your initial idea sounded good. Remember that there is a small group cycle that everyone goes through, and at the beginning, a lot of the conversation is going to seem shallow and non-consequential in the long run, but you need to go through that stage to get to know each other. Once you start to get to know the girls (and even if you already know them, there still needs to be time of getting to know them in this context and figuring out where each one is and stuff), you'll be able to see a bit more of maybe what they need to hear. A good idea to start is to just to maybe throw out a few general questions such as "what do you want from this?" or "what are some things that we've touched on in youth group that you m ight want to talk more about?" and "what are some things that we can do together as a group?" They might not be able to answer right away, but it will get them thinking along those lines. Then, spend time in prayer together committing your group to the Lord. (That's a great way to get them talking, too, by the way...asking for prayer requests) And, last but not least, and this is a given, but I'll say it anyway, pray. Ask God to give you specific guidance. Um... ok I could go on and on about this (I'm in the process of writing a curriculum to train my small group leaders this smmer), but I'll shut up now. I hope that helped and I wasn't just rambling... And I think it's awesome that you're taking initiative to start this group!!! If you want more info or whatever, you can PM me His Latte Answer: Heh, a pastor in my church talked about this yesterday.. Answer: I think this'll be better suited here. Answer: alright thanks so much...my first session is this friday and then maybe next saturday again and a bunch of weekends in april. i hope it all goes well. thanks for all the great suggestions!
