I have been called to serve Christ through music....
Question: I've been asked and nudged towards music by Jesus... I'm 15 years old, I play guitar and sing, and want to get a band together, yet I can't find a drummer or a bass player. I feel as though he called me to be the lead singer /guitar in a band, but I'm not getting any help. What should I do? (Besides keep praying ) -Eli Answer: Originally Posted by Ganner I've been asked and nudged towards music by Jesus... Just make sure you're practicing so you're as good as you can be and you're available to be used. Answer: Originally Posted by Ganner I've been asked and nudged towards music by Jesus... Its easy to masquerade a desire as the will of God. It seems odd that it seems like such a desirable thing. If it is what you are called to do... Then be the best you can be, practice, but be careful. Fame tempts. Answer: I'm sure. I felt Him tell em this a couple months ago at a youth camp... Answer: Originally Posted by Ganner I'm sure. (Besides keep praying ) If God has truly called you to serve Him with your music, then He will bring you the other band members when He's ready for you to have them. My advice would be to patiently wait, practice, and pray. Answer: Hey man, I felt the same call since I was about 14. Many bands come and go, but only now at 24 do I feel I'm in the right one. I managed to put a band together from different muso's from different churches when I was about 17 only (so that was a few years later from my first call.) The band only lasted a few months. I had to endure many YEARS of seeing all my other mates in bands while I had none, until I was 22. Then I played in a band for about a year, and it broke up. Only now, at 25, do I feel I'm finally in the right band and right place. But it took all those years for God to mature me and teach me a whole lot, so I can have the right character, I think, as this is a big responsibility. Still learning, but you must have patience in this. You must have patience, it can take years. For some, not. For most, it does. Answer: I think God has called me to music, but I think that it definitely isn't going to be my main source of income or anything, I just think that God wants me to be doing things with music when I am older, which makes sense because I love music more than almost anything. So far from ministers giving me words from God and such I have gathered that I will probably have something to do with youth when I'm older. I don't know if this helps at all, but I just thought I'd tell you my position in case it does. Answer: When I was about 15 I too had the compelling feeling that I was called into music ministry. At that point, I'd never touched a guitar and I couldn't carry a tune in a bucket with a forklift. I prayed to God and said if He wanted me in ministry I'd do whatever it took for however long it'd take to get there. I bought my first guitar that summer with my lawn cutting money and practiced almost every day for 3 years. I took vocal classes in school for 3 semesters. And now, 7 years later. I play guitar and sing in a praise team at my church. What's my point you ask? I prayed to God asking for His guidance. I worked for years from ground zero. And God brought me into His ministry. I'm certainly not doubting you when you say you feel called into music ministry. I'm saying it's going to take prayer and a lot of work. Possibly and probably years. Don't get discouraged. Stick with it. Just don't ever take your eyes off of who your music is for. Answer: God has called me to be a musician, just not for a living. Trust that the One who called you will provide opportunities, but they may not be what you expect. Most musicians are volunteers. If you forget why you are doing it...to put it bluntly, it sucks for everyone. Answer: Yeah when you take your eyes off of God, singing praises to Him becomes more of a job than a joy. There's a lot of difference with that one little letter. Answer: Originally Posted by Ganner I've been asked and nudged towards music by Jesus... I was prolly a year older than you when I heard God call me to music. Things didn't happen right away. I started writing music and looking for band members, but all the people I'd find would be older and wouldn't take me serious. So a year or two went by, and I started looking. I had found some people my age, but none of us didn't have the same vision for the band. So it never worked out. I had went thru a handful of musicians and not a single one of them had stayed around to put together a band. I really started getting discouraged and wondering if this is what God had called me to do. Just last year I had found two guys who were similar in the same style as me and started up a band with them. Everything was going great, we were playing shows, we had just recorded 2 songs with a guy who's band is pretty big in the Christian market, but the thing that shocked me is when God told me to quit that band. I was standing there thinking "God, if this is what you want me to do, how can I quit it?" But I tried to stay in it, but then the singer of the band basically kicked me out since I was writing music for myself and not for the band. But God really broke my fall with that. The two guys found another drummer, but with the bassist I was still good friends with. But a period of a couple months, the drummer they got was pretty young, so the singer kicked him out too. And after that the bassist was wanting to start another band with the singer, but the singer basically refused and found another band. I know this prolly doesn't seem like a good story, but I really feel like God had given me a taste of what a real Christian band is supposed to be like. I knew God had called me to do my own thing, but earlier I had joined to help other bands. But what is awesome is God is molding me and possibly the bassist in my last band who is an awesome friend to starting a new band. I guess my advice to you Eli is this: If God has called you to that, never lose sight of it. Never let pride get in the way cuz pride can ruin it. A lot of musicians in bands are doing it for their own glory but not God's. So never lose sight of why you're doing it. Also God prepares us for what He calls us to do. It won't be overnight that it happens, it usually takes steps to prepare you for it. If God just shoved it all in front of you, you'd be overwhelmed. But God slowly leads you so you'll pick up on what you learned and use it in the future. Also, never lose sight of that dream. That is God's gift to you. People will try to discourage you and say "that's never gonna happen", but that's when you have to dig your feet in the dirt and say "I'm not moving till God tells me to move". People prolly thought Noah was crazy for building an Ark, but it's a good thing Noah faithfully obeyed God. Just want to say stay strong and in the Word of God and never lose sight of His promise. -J Answer: I agree with what others have said. If God has called you, then He will make it happen, in His time. In the mean time, practice as much as you can. Never forget that it is a gift to be a musician, and you need to use it wisely. Try to get involved in your church with music, and you will improve as a musician so much more if you frequently play with other, more experienced musicians that you can learn from.
