Choosing a college
Question: I need some advice (financial) about deciding which college to get into. This might be a little longish; I have to make this decision in the next week or so, so advice would be helpful. (We are planning to see our financial aid consultant, but I would rather do some stuff on my own so that my parents just can't push me in the general direction of a college). Here's the colleges I have heard back from which I am considering going to: Bryn Mawr College, PA St. Mary's College of Maryland (SMCM), MD Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU), OH Drew University, NJ College of Wooster, OH I am also hoping to hear positively from Bates College in Maine (apparently they are more selective than Bryn Mawr, so who knows?) I want to go to a school with a serious group of students and a challenging workload. I am confident that Bryn Mawr and Bates will give me that. I also want a program that has something of a name for itself. Again, Bryn Mawr and Bates will give me that (at least, Bryn Mawr will). The only thing holding me back is money. I have gotten financial awards from several of these schools, so here's how the tuition costs look for me: Bryn Mawr: $45,343 (minus a grant for $4294.00 and a Federal Unsub Stafford - 1st for $3500 gives me $37640...) OWU: $23,000 Drew: $27,000 SMCM: $19,000 Wooster: $35,000 So...better to put myself in debt and go to an extremely challenging school...or to go to a decent school? I probably haven't thought out all the reasons yet for going to either, so maybe knowing the questions to be asking myself would be more helpful than getting advice on what to do. (But either, really. Yup ). Thanks, Answer: Originally Posted by jengoesup I need some advice (financial) about deciding which college to get into. Actually IWU (Indiana Weslyean University) is also a GREAT college, if you are looking at the Weslyean aspect. (But either, really. Yup ). Thanks, What is your major going to be and how do these schools stack up for that particular major? Do any of them offer an interesting twist on the major that might interest you? Answer: Well I was thinking English, but I'm leaning in the anthropology/archeology/sociology direction. (Actually, all aspects of the humanities appeal to me). EDIT: And as strange as it might sound for someone like me, I am considering a math or physics related career. SMCM is in the middle of an archaeological dig site (Saint Mary's City, which is a colonial..."place" and is no longer inhabited). The thing that really goes against SMCM is that it's in the middle of nowhere...not really a town nearby. Bryn Mawr is renowned for their Humanities programs. Drew is cool because it happens to have a theological seminary on campus (and the Methodist headquarters)--but I don't think I could do anything academically with that except take some cool religious studies courses. Other than that well, I don't really know. I guess that's one thing to start looking into, though. Answer: Drew's theological seminary is a bit jacked up - UMC seminaries tend to be. Why this list? Have you considered, for instance, Grove City College - which has very low tuition and great academics? I considered this list because my parents and I agreed that a four year, liberal arts college is the best place for me. I've also decided that I want to go to a secular college.
