Cat in my ceiling
Question: I live in Indonesia. I just moved into a house about a month ago, and there is some kind of critter in the roof. i thought it was one of those huge rats and thought about actually getting a cat. then I decided against it. I actually got some rat poison that I haven't used yet. Well, it turns out the critter is a cat who just had kittens. It's probably a stray. I suppose this could become an ethical debate on the morality of killing cats verses rats. i am not too keen on the idea of killing kittens, and I don't think I'm going to be going up in my ceiling to get them out. I just want the cat out of my cieling. Hearing it up there is irritating. I have thought of rat poison, but I wouldn't want un-cared for kittens to die in my roof. Got any ideas for getting rid of cats? I'd rather them leave and find some other place to stay. Do those electronic sound emitters made for rats do anything to cats? Answer: O.O reading this slightly disturbed me.. espically the fact that you're considering using rat poison to kill at cat. I say call local animal control, they will usually come and take it out of your roof, with care.. not with rat poison. Answer: ok. first off, apologies for momentarily deleting the thread. It was discussed with other mods/Smods and consencus was to re-open and edit slightly. I second Kato. get animal control in there to try and get rid of them, or even use humane traps that will just catch the cat and not harm it. Have you seen the kittens? If so, how old are they? Are they at the stage of running around or are they still tiny, tiny? They could be easier to just pick up and transport (After you've taken care of the mother) In any event it was also suggested this be moved to pets/animals so... whoosh. Answer: I'm with Chris (not me, the other one ), wouldn't it be pretty easy to just go up into the attic, pick the cats up and move them somewhere else? Haha, of course, in my sig it's demonstrated an effective way of dealing with cats. Answer: I'll try not to laugh at the animal control suggestion. Like I said, I live in Indonesia. indonesia is a developing country, and I seriously doubt they have a state or city funded 'animal control.' They need to put in some sidewalks and paint their speed bumps before they start thinking about putting money into such low-priority government services. I hear you can pay people to get snakes off your property. If it were a dog in my roof, I might be able to talk someone into going up there and getting it out for the meat. But the only people I know who eat cat, I hear, are Monodonese, who are know for their high self-worth and I doubt I could find any willing to go into a roof. i don't want to go up there. They don't build a lot of these houses with the idea of a 190 pound man walking around in them. I'm not that agile, either, and I know better to try to go up into a roof around here again. The guys around here who build these houses are more along the lines of 140 pounds. The cat's lair is far from the entrance to the attic, too, and I'd prefer if no one had to go up there, but I'm open to the idea if someone would like to. But I doubt it would solve the problem if the cat still lived. She could just take her babies up there again when the coast is clear. Maybe she will move out and take the kids when they are big enough. I keep hoping for it. Ethics wise, what is the difference between killing a cat or a rat, btw? Both David and Samson killed great cats ('loins' in the KJV, possibly some kind of wild-cat.) David seemed to attribute his ability to do so to God, and the Samson was able. I don't like killing either personally. It would be harder for me emotionally if I had to kill a cat, but I don't see that as necessary in this situation either. Some of those previous comments might have been lost in the mods editting, but I'm not sure. Cats here are generally nasty varments anyway, that dig in the garbage and cause trouble. I guess some people keep them as pets but I don't recall visiting any Indonesians doing so in my 6+ years here. Answer: I just don't want to smell your house after the fact. Answer: What I would do, just put on some thick gloves and try to force the animals out of the house. I understand that conditions are different there, so I doubt there's an animal shelter nearby (like you said, people first, then animals). So just put them on the gound outside and the mother should find them a new home (though it'd probably be someone else's home). If they decide to kill them, then they can. But it gets rid of your moral dilema. Answer: don't kill them in your attic, whatever you do. THAT WILL REEK!!!! it smells horrid to have a dead cat in the attic. We had a stray cat decide to crawl in our attic and die. It is horrifically worse than catt crap and pee. I think a box trap would be your best option. I know they have them in PNG for kapoo, so I am thinking you could probably get one as indonesia is a bit more developed in my understanding. Even a cat can't find it's way back if you have it in a box trap, and take it miles away. I would strongly reccoend figuring out how they got in and blocking it up. Answer: This thread is hilarious. I'm sure SOMEONE there would want to eat them. Just shop around. Answer: Ask your church if someone would be willing to help you out. FYI, I see no difference in using rat poison to kill a rat and using it to kill a cat. Answer: Originally Posted by Aaron Adams Ask your church if someone would be willing to help you out. Honestly, if you are going to get rid of them that way you might as well do it while they are alive. Animals also tend to crawl into the most impossible places to find right before they die. What can I say? I'm a cat lover, lol. Besides, Cat's smell worst than Rats while dead. Answer: I like the idea of a box-trap. Perhaps you could place it near the entrance to the attic and somehow bait them into it. I dunno. There aren't any small kids in your neighborhood/village/etc that would be willing to do you a favor for a few bucks, though? In His love, Nate Answer: Good suggestions. Answer: DON'T USE RAT POISON! Anti-freeze works much better! But seriously... what I would do... I would feed them. Get them to become your "friends" and then, one day, if you're running low on food, you can kill it, cook it, then eat it. My friend said that cats taste like chicken. That story behind how he ate the cat leg is freakin' hilarious... but I'll only tell you if you pm me and ask. Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
