Communication Field?
Question: Hey anybody out there in CGR land in the field of Communication? More specifically Audio/Video Production? Also just curious if there are any professional chefs (of any kind)? what can I say....music and food are my two passions....well & photography...maybe that's it (I'm a passionate person..apparently) BAM Answer: though not a professional in AV field I am trying. I am directing a micro budget (<$10,000) indie feature on a homebrew Broadcast DV system (Hybrid Digital M-II direct-to-disk system) this winter and it is probably the largest indie production in Ohio..possibly midwest. Roughly 30 speaking roles and 18 locations throughout central ohio. The writers are finalizing the script as we speak and I think I won most of the ideology battles (depiction of prolifers/substance abuse/etc) We are starting photography in December and hope to be done by April. Best thing to do for AV is to read technical articles and reviews of movies. Know why an award winning movie won an award. ie Dopamine won the Sloan award at Sundance 2002(?) It's a science and technology award for depicting an interesting topic... the movie itself sucked. Then buy gear and make movies always challenge yourself and find people you can work with (which is really hard as there are an awful lot of wannabes in Video. I ran into a group with a 1CCD miniDV camera that called themselves a film company. Know why that is bad before you do anything Shooting on 1CCD is "fine" for beginers who just want to get their feet wet before sinking a few grand into a camera but you shouldn't go around bragging to people. Also... just because you like watching movies doesn't mean you will like making movies. the majic goes away really quick. Like getting into audio and then realizing that nothing on the radio is very good. You can find the mistakes easilly. Citizen Kane for example... great "classic" movie... with the exception of the split focus ... it suffered appalling mistakes. When first run epeople walked out. It was booed at the Academy Awards. You can see camera shadows, loss of audio sync, cables..etc. It won an award at the Academy Awards... for script... Now imagine you watch a great flick but they accidently mix light lemperatures... people are either red or blue... usually you would ignore it... but now you would want to kill the director... Answer: hey thanks for the input. That's really cool about your film. One of my professors is getting ready to realease his first film. It's called "Chicks 101" kind of a college aged comedy I think. I don't really think I'll ever "make movies" I'd be fine being a camera operator. As far as mistakes in movies/radio etc goes, since I've been in the COMM department I realize that I notice the mistakes & the really good stuff more than most of my friends/family. It drives them crazy sometimes when we watch movies becasue I'll be like "oh that was a great shot" or "ohh that rack focus sucked.." Anyway, who knows where I'll end up. thanks again for the input. BAM Answer: I just finished school with a degree in Mass Comm...and I'm finding out how difficult it is to get "in" without knowing anyone on the inside. I'm just looking for a job doing something that I like (basically anything on the tech side, except photojournalism (not that I won't do it, but I know that isn't my strongest point, and something I need to work on)), somewhere. I really don't care too much (right now anyway) about where I work, Television News, Radio, a Production House...I just want to find something. The idea of a "one man band," or one person doing everything seems to be the big thing now. People want you to be able to shoot, edit, write, interview...everything. So know what you want to do, learn to do it well, and learn everything else you can. My real passion is everything audio. If I could get a job doing something in audio I think I would be happy. Even if I was just editing speaches or interviews down for a radio station. The dream is to own a studio and be able to support a family from that alone...but I know how far fetched that idea is. But there is always that "maybe" in the back of my head. Answer: Oh, and I completely agree...do everything you can. Don't just do what you can to get by. Put in the extra hours, get to know your stuff inside out. Learn why things work. How you can make them work for you better. Read product manuals (or maybe I'm just the only dork who does that ). Do extra stuff...help other people...etc. etc. etc. Answer: yeah, main goal is the foot in the door. Today actually I'm applying to work as an equipment install tech for a company that builds ENG/EFP/Mobile Command Post trucks. I really need the extra money to sink into my rig Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
