Another death in our church family
Question: This has been such a hard 9 months for our church. Hurricane Katrina flooded most of the homes of our members and many never returned to the area. Then we lost a very dear friend, Chris, to cancer a few months ago. Today we got a call that Brother Mitch died last night of a heart attack. You would have to have known Mitch to understand the impact he has had on the community that surrounds our church. It is a poor neighborhood where many kids are simply left on their own by parents who just don't care. Mitch wandered these streets ministering to these kids and many of the youth who have passed through our church were there because of Mitch. He used to call the local McDonald's his "office". I can't even remember how long ago it was but Mitch lost most of his vision to diabetes. It never slowed him down. He was still on the streets, preaching, teaching, and ministering. He took training to learn to deal with basically being blind. Mitch was a praying man. It wasn't at all unusual to find Mitch standing next to someone with his hands on the shoulders praying for them. Many times he prayed for me and my boys. Every Sunday he would be standing just inside the door waiting for Jason or Daniel to come in and make coffee for him. He was truly a friend and mentor to all of us and I can't imagine walking in to church tomorrow and not having Mitch there. It's been a long year and I am worn out from crying. Please pray for his wife and kids. They didn't come to our church with Mitch so we really don't know them very well (I believe his wife attended a more tradition African American full gospel baptist church). I know Mitch is with his Lord but I'm going to miss him.
