Potential VT Copycat in Placer/Yuba counties, CA
Question: my school is posting bulletins everywhere. apparently a guy in Yuba City called his pastor last night and threatened to do a copycat of the Virginia Tech shooting. there are cops on every campus between Roseville and Yuba City. thankfully, there are detailed descriptions of him, but it is still very scary. I seriously do not want to leave my dorm room. they haven't caught him yet, and I guess he said that he wanted to do a shooting that would make VT look mild, comparatively. one of my biggest fears is that, as the VT shooter raged against christians in his video, that this shooter is also going to target christians. well, I go to the only christian university in the area, and my fear is that he may come here. I mean, for him to go any place would be horrible, but...I really don't want him coming here. my dorm building is keycard protected, so even if he smashed through the front door he wouldn't be able to get into any of the wings, but all of the classes are open. I really do not want to go to class right now. this is what we know, pretty much: Originally Posted by bulletin from school website Man Sought After Making Virginia Tech-type Threats Deputies have telephone recordings of messages Carney left Wednesday in which he claims to be armed with an "AK-47, improvised explosive devices and poison." "He said he wanted to do suicide by cop," said Parker, who added his department has had numerous previous contacts with Carney. "He has been in our jail many times in the past, most recently for domestic violence," Parker said. Carney is described as 6-feet, 1-inch, 190 pounds with brown eyes and short brown hair. He is a transient, but his last known address was with family in North Yuba City. Carney is possibly driving a red mid-1990s Honda/Toyota-type sedan with a black hood. Sutter County authorities have notified neighboring law enforcement officials in Yuba County. Area school districts have been alerted and some schools have been locked down, Parker said. Yuba Unified School District has posted an alert on their website advising parents and staff that schools have been placed on a "heightened level of security." Schools are asked to operate in a lockdown mode until further notice and campus supervision has been increased, according to the alert. Officials at the district, the largest in the area, said the lockdown mode was similar to a rainy-day schedule. Doors are locked, children are not allowed to take recess outdoors and are escorted to the bathrooms. Parents are allowed to take their children out of school if they choose, Deputy Superintendent Baldev Johal said. "Some parents are taking their children out, but we are encouraging them not to because they are safe," Johal said. "We have received no direct threat, but law enforcement has told us that they think they know of a man who wants to go on a killing spree. We are following the direction of law enforcement." The district has 17 schools with 12,500 students. Anyone with information on Carney is asked to contact Sutter County Sheriff's officials at (530) 822-7307. The Bee's Ryan Lillis and Sheila Kern contributed to this report. additionally, stuff posted on the door says he said he will "make Virginia Tech look mild" (as I said above) and that he has an AK-47 among other explosives and such. please, please, please pray. this is very serious, and based on the bulletin it looks like there's a possibility he might try to hit a grade school. Answer: I'll be praying. That's really all you can do. Answer: Just prayed that this would end peacefully, and I'll keep praying. God bless . Answer: thank you guys. I took off for home yesterday, so I wasn't at school last night but I got an email today saying that the guy surrendered himself to the police without a fight, as far as I know. thank God this was resolved without any bloodshed. thanks for your prayers. Answer: Three schools here in Elizabeth City, NC were put on lockdown today after somebody phoned in a threat to one of them. Answer: oh no. I will be sure and pray for that situation. it's very hard to know what to really be afraid of, and what are just malicious threats in the wake of a disaster. I think that's partly what makes all of these situations so terrible--they could be bad jokes, but no one wants to risk it. Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
