Question?

Question:
Well this week, im having a debate at our wendsday bible study, about who God is, and I have an opinion on who he is. But I just wanna know what everyone else here thinks?
Answer:
God?
Answer:
Well, God's answer was simply: "I am who I am" (Ex. 3:14).
Answer:
Well, before someone beats me to it:
God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth. (Westminster Catechism)
Some of the creeds (esp. the Athanasian creed) would also be a good starting point for discussion on the nature of God.

(Westminster Catechism) Aww, and I've got that one memorized. Beat me to it! Though it does seem to emphasis the "transcendent" to the exclusion of the "immanent," to some extent...
Answer:
Lately I've simply gone by Exodus 3:14, as Nate posted, and left it at that. Why do I need to really define God in a strict sense? While I can appreciate the ability to approach such a subject from an academic angle, my meanderings with non-Christians have hardly approached that level of thought and I can't see how defining God would be helpful for my own spiritual life beyond what catechisms have eloquently stated for hundreds of years...

That's because it is talking about God Simplicur, not God the Trinity.

Back to the point... the catechism continues and builds more of the doctrine of God as it goes on, whereas our quotation of the one q/a can't do that. Eek!
Answer:
*ahem* weak, bob, really weak.
Whatever - as I said before to John:
Yes, John you are correct. Simpliciter, I had thought of googling my "Simplicur" word - but then thought, hey - what the hell... But you have shamed me publicly, and for that I shall never forgive you.
My misspelling of the word comes from the fact that I have actually never seen it written, just spoken to me in a thick Scottish brogue (where the word "dual" sounds like "jewel" - so much so that I had a 5 minute interaction with my Hebrew professor about the "jewel form" and why in the world it was called that). This, combined with the fact that I was probably playing "Dragon Warrior" on my laptop during that particular lecture, is I believe enough of an excuse.
My Hebrew professor had the opposite problem of me - he never talked with anyone, but read voraciously and wrote to people. So, during lectures he was constantly mispronouncing names of people (Brueggemann became "brew-aye-ga-man"), places and things.
Now, because I have been shamed I shall now go commit hari-kari.
Cheers!
